Thankful Thursday

Good morning and Happy New Year’s Eve!

Any fun plans tonight? We originally planned on staying in, but then my dad offered to watch the girls, which was an offer we could not refuse. So, although Dan and I don’t have plans, we are ready to hit up the town tonight. And likely be in bed by 10.

Today I am thankful for:

-My new planner. I am trying to realistically set a few goals for 2016. Nothing crazy, because I am giving myself a break this year, but still, I need something.

- Snow!

IMG 4194

See my “attempt” at a snowman in the background? About 3 minutes in my hands got cold and I told Ina she would have to wait until her dad got home to build a snowman.

- Dan’s awesome chicken smoking skills.

IMG 4199

Yesterday he smoked two buffalo chickens that were so spicy they burned my face off (in the good way).

- Star Wars. I have to admit I have never seen the first set of Star Wars movies. So, with the cold weather and the sun going down at 5, we have been watching them as a family together. Cora even likes them, if her happily screaming is any indication.

- #2015bestnine on Instagram.

IMG 4202

Such a fun way to see the year - obviously it had a very Cora-focus.

I hope you have a happy and safe NYE! I will be back tomorrow with some goals for the year (maybe).

15 Ways Christmas 2015 was Great

FullSizeRender 1

1. We met some friends and their kids for a pre-holiday puzzle session. This picture is a straight-up miracle.

IMG 4096

2. We made egg nog. Oh my, you must do this ASAP, or at least by next Christmas.

IMG 4101

3. We saw Star Wars on Christmas Eve as a family. Both Ina and Cora were perfect during the entire movie.

IMG 4115

4. On Christmas Even we went to Grandma Frankie’s house where we were all spoiled. I also made whipped goat cheese with honey, which I haven’t been able to stop thinking about since eating at Rye.

IMG 4126

5. We opened presents as a family for the first time on Christmas morning at our house. It was so sweet and perfect and even though Ina has opened a lot of toys this year she showed plenty of gratitude over her socks, underwear, band-aides, toothpaste, sippy cups, and Tic-Tacs that were in her stocking.

6. Dan gave me a gift certificate to have my car professionally cleaned inside and out SIX times and I gave myself (and my mom) a Day Designer. My type A personality could not be more excited.

IMG 4130

7. After opening presents we rushed around in order to get ready for Christmas at my grandma’s. We left the house without shoes for Ina, but thankfully Grandma gave her some, so she played in her dress, tights, and Nikes.

IMG 0098

8. Brunch at grandma’s house was delicious and opening presents was interesting as my mom proposed that we sing a Christmas song in between each present. Three Cheers for new family traditions!

IMG 0101

9. We had more farm fresh milk (+ cottage cheese, and sour cream) delivered! It really does pay to know the right people.

IMG 4152

10. After playing and laughing and eating a diet of mostly sugar and butter, we all crashed hard.

IMG 4136

11. Cora can now suck her big toe no problem

IMG 4147

12. We visited Dan’s dad and step-mom the day after Christmas. Papa Dana taught Ina how to make a fire and she has only asked to have one in our fire place 10 times since then.

IMG 4149

13. We went to church yesterday and Ina sings, “Thank you God for Baby Jesus” over and over (and over) again.

14. The Chiefs made it to the playoffs!

15. We ended the holiday yesterday by having my mom’s mom’s side of the family over to our house. I was busy playing hostess/nursing mom, so I didn’t have much time to take pictures, but it was great having all of them over.

I hope you holidays were just a lovely! Happy last week of the year!

2015 Christmas Card

Merry Christmas from the Kendricks!

2015 christmas card

(Remind me next Thanksgiving to show you how I do our cards - super easy and cheap!)

Past Christmas Cards: 2014 / 2013 (and beyond!)

The past few days have been stressful, but not because this is the day before Christmas Eve. We reached a peak (I hope) in the defiant 3 year old phase and we are slowly seeing Ina’s sweetness return. Last night she asked for candy and I told her she had to pick a healthy snack instead. I took her to the pantry and she pointed to a can of white beans. After we rinsed them off in the sink she proceeded to eat 3/4 of the can. Of room temperature, unseasoned, plain old white beans.

IMG 4066

Also, Monday morning I found a nail in my tire.

IMG 4059

Then yesterday the girls couldn’t go to daycare, so I worked and entertained them at the same time.

IMG 4060

Despite the stress, I have had quite the treat of enjoying friends company on both Monday and Tuesday night. I felt so guilty having Dan parent solo two nights in a row, but he insisted that I go enjoy the rare opportunity to see my friends, and enjoy I did. Monday night I met a few of my friends from high school and even though I was up way past my bedtime, it was amazing.

IMG 1905

Then Tuesday night I met some friends from pharmacy school at Rye. (Kansas City people - go there ASAP. The whipped goat cheese with honey appetizer and the trout are AH-mazing.)

The holidays always remind me how incredibly blessed my family is with the people in our lives and this year is no exception.

Merry Christmas to you and your family! <3

Christmas Caroling

Good morning!

Yesterday started like this:

IMG 4007

and ended like this:

IMG 4057

Balance, right?

It was a good day, albeit challenging in the parenting-a-3-year-old department.

IMG 4047

First, we went to church with Christmas dresses for the win.

IMG 4040

(Ina’s photography skills are improving.)

Next, we grabbed some lunch to deliver to Dan at work. We sure do miss him on the weekends and should probably venture out to meet him more. After lunch was nap time (which we needed, desperately).

Then, we met up with some of our small group families to go Christmas caroling. I have to be honest and say that this was something I was not looking forward to at all. I went caroling as a kid and I remember it being incredibly horrible and awkward. You ring someone’s doorbell and then stand there and sing while they stand they there and listen.

IMG 4051

Surprisingly, it wasn’t horrible. Yes, it was still awkward, even though less so with cute kids in tow. Yes, we hadn’t practiced the songs, so we sounded pretty interesting. Yes, I didn’t make eye contact with anyone at the first two house. But then, all of a sudden it was fun.

People actually ran to get their coats and come outside to listen to us. They smiled, waved, and even clapped when we had finished and told each other, “Merry Christmas.” What I didn’t think about was that it was a great way to tell people about Jesus in (off-pitch and weird rhythm) song form. Once I thought of it that way and let go of my ego, I was sad when we finished at the last house.

I am actually looking forward to going next year. Funny how that works, huh?

IMG 4055

All that singing worked up an appetite, so we met for some hot cocoa and cookies afterwards.

’Tis the season.

I hope you have a lovely holiday week! <3

Thoughts from the Weekend

A few thoughts from the weekend:

- I have watched this video at least 30 times and can’t stop laughing.

We just had to. #roombababy

A video posted by Racheal (@runningwithrach) onDec 17, 2015 at 5:34pm PST

- Whoever thought up dark chocolate covered cashews with sea salt is my new best friend.

- Cookie recipes cannot be improvised. Who wants two cookie-esque casseroles?

- I don’t know which I feel worse about: Giving Ina socks for Christmas or having her with me when I bought them at CostCo?

Mommy, can I hold those?

No, wanna try a quiche?

- I LOVE T25 gamma, except for Speed 3.0, during which I mostly feel like a chicken with my head cut off doing burpees.

- I have all my Christmas stuff done. No, wait, what about stocking stuffers?

- There is almost nothing better than when both kids nap at the same time.

IMG 3993

(Cora is all smiles until you put a camera in front of her and then she

- When you think your daughter has just made her sister’s face bleed by dropping a toy on her head, the relief when you find out the “blood” is actually tomato sauce is pretty good.

Here is my plan for the week:

Food - this doesn’t really count, because we will only be cooking 3 meals at home, but better to have a plan, right?

  • Sunday: leftovers
  • Monday: out to eat with friends
  • Tuesday: out to eat with (different) friends
  • Wednesday: tandori chicken with roasted beets and brussels sprouts
  • Thursday: Christmas Eve!
  • Friday: Christmas!
  • Saturday: orange sriracha chicken with roasted beets and brussels sprouts

Fitness: T25 Gamma Week 2 with rest days on Thursday and Sunday

Thankful Thursday

Good morning!

IMG 3976

How has your week been? Our's has been just okay. Poor Ina has been sick with a GI bug, but is still trucking along, which I am so thankful for.

I am also thankful for:

-Family watching Ina while she is sick and no one else in our friends/family catching what she has.

-My new Fitbit ChargeHR!

IMG 3985

My family drew names this year for Christmas and I seriously, seriously lucked out when my cousin Ashley drew my name. I have wanted one of these for a long time now, but haven’t been able to get one due to some kind of silly reasons (re: Dan’s paranoia). I will write a full review a little later, but so far I really love it! I thought that I would see how sedentary my life is because I have a desk job, but as it turns out, having two children helps me easily get 10K steps a day. On Monday I worked from home with the girls and I went up and down the stairs 35 times! Ha!

-T25 Gamma workouts. Short, effective DVD workouts are what I need in this season of my life, especially with a  broken treadmill. I started the gamma round of T25 and so far I really like it because the workouts are focused more on lifting. I love feeling myself getting stronger.

-Chipotle. Seriously.

-Our budget. This time of year is usually pretty stressful financially, because it seems like everything comes at once. Christmas gifts. Personal property taxes. Our timeshare maintenance fees. Fixing our stove. Buying new tires for my car. The list goes on and on. However, because we budgeted and saved for all those things, paying for them is as simple as transferring money from one account to the next.

I hope you have a blessed day! <3

Lake House Christmas

Hello!

IMG 0450

We are back from an amazing weekend of Christmas fun at my family’s brand-spanking-new lake house.

IMG 7297

I wish I had taken pictures to show you just how beautiful it is, but for now you will just have to take my word for it. This place is unreal.

IMG 3957

We also really, really enjoyed our time with family. The food, the cookies, the extra kids to play with, the cards, the view, the hugs, the laughs, and the extra arms to hold sleeping babies made for an especially enjoyable weekend.

IMG 3955

Coming back home was hard. Back to the real world we go with meal planning, working out, and such.

IMG 3950

Sigh.

IMG 3952

Here is my plan for the week:

Food:

Fitness: T25 Gamma Week 1 - rest days will likely be Thursday and Saturday

I hope you have a lovely week! <3

Thankful Thursday

Hello Thankful Thursday, it has been awhile.

IMG 3918

Today I am thankful for so many things, which I will write in list form because the window of time in which I have two free hands is closing.

- Our small group cookie exchange. Third year in a row!

- My father-in-law is tolerating his first round of chemo very well! They are staying with us and I am so thankful he is staying healthy.

IMG 3920

- This gingerbread house gift from our friends:

IMG 3914

It is now missing the snowman, which I would bet is somewhere underneath Ina’s bed and the roof, which is mostly crumbled on the living room floor. I made her wait until Dan was home to break into it and you would think I was intentionally torturing her.

- A spur-of-the-moment run that Dan encouraged me to go on after dinner was simmering on the stove, Cora was asleep, and Ina was watching Winnie the Pooh

IMG 3907

It had been a few months since I had run and I forgot just how therapeutic it is. I love T25, how much stronger I am getting, and how it works in my current life/schedule, but I look forward to the day that I can run consistently again.

- That all the Christmas presents we ordered are here! We have our first family Christmas this weekend and UPS was cutting it close. Whew.

- Speaking of family Christmas - I took a vacation day tomorrow. Yay for 3 day weekends!

- This post that made me laugh out loud this morning.

- Dan smoked two chickens on Monday, which have provided us dinner the past three nights. I used the chicken to make chicken pot pie soup and BBQ chicken quinoa casserole. YUM.

What are you thankful for?

Have a lovely weekend. <3

Sleep

Hello!

How are things going on your side of the internet?

IMG 3903

(New library books!)

I am trucking along over here, although I constantly feel like I am losing my mind. On Sunday, the girls and I left for church with the front door completely wide open. Fortunately, no wild animals sought shelter in our home and unfortunately, no one took any of our stuff. (I am just being silly of course, but sometimes I joke with Dan and say I wish someone would take some of our stuff off our hands. He doesn’t think it is funny.)

Then, yesterday, someone asked me how old Ina was and I answered, “two and a half,’ even though I had just spent the last month lavishly celebrating her third birthday. It wasn’t until that person asked me if Ina was potty trained that I remembered she is in fact three.

I blame my lack of brain capacity on the fact that Cora is sleeping horribly. From one to three months she woke up at most twice a night, but for the past 4 weeks it has been 4 to 5 times a night. Thankfully, she snacks a little and this goes back to sleep. The reasonable part of my brain knows that I shouldn’t let her snack and make her take a full feeding so she won’t do the same thing again in an hour and a half, but the sleepy part of my brain, well, goes to sleep right along with her.

At Cora’s 4 month appointment, the doctor said she is slightly underweight, mostly because of how long she is. So, I am thinking she is waking up to eat more? I might try having Dan give her a bottle right before bedtime to see if that helps.

IMG 3874

(They kind of like each other.)

At the same doctor’s appointment we talked about Ina sleeping in her big girl bed. The doctor gave us a sheet of stickers to use as a reward for Ina. (What the doctor didn’t know was that we needed a reward for daddy too.) However, it is amazing what a sticker will do. Ina has slept in her bed the past two nights without getting up once.

IMG 3610

Last night she was kind of scared, but stayed brave with her blankie and stuffed animals and counted the “sprinkles” coming off her mirror. I am so proud of her.

So between Cora and Ina’s wake-ups, I am not sleeping at all, but at least it is at the same time?

A whole blog post about sleep? Chalk that up to things I never thought I would do before I had kids.

Have a lovely day. <3

Bounce House + Gingerbread

Good Sunday Morning!

IMG 3840 1

On weekends when Dan works, I can’t gather up the nerve to tackle the world with two children by myself. So, other than venturing out to Aldi, we typically stay at home.

IMG 3837

Well, yesterday was a treat, because after our Aldi trip and nap(ish), we went to my nephew Jake’s birthday party at a bounce house, where Ina sufficiently wore herself out

IMG 3853

and Cora was given all the attention she desires.

IMG 3847

Then, we went home, met Dan, and drove to his uncle’s house for a gingerbread house making party.

IMG 3855

His girlfriend Tara (who we adore) decorated the house amazingly and supplied us with everything we would need to make a gingerbread village.

IMG 3862

Although we didn’t build anything and pretty much watched other people work and snuck bites of candy, it was a great social outing when we would have most likely be in bed otherwise.

IMG 3869

This week is going to be short because we will be out of town this weekend.

Food

Snacks: smoothies, date and oatmeal cookies

Fitness: This is my last week of the beta round of T25. Better make it count!

  • Sunday: rest
  • Monday: Rip’t Circuit
  • Tuesday: Core Cardio
  • Wednesday: Rip’t Circuit
  • Thursday: Dynamic Core
  • Friday: Rip’t Circuit + Speed 2.0

Three

Happy third birthday to my bold, beautiful, puzzle-loving Ina Mae.

IMG 3762

I sang Happy Birthday to her yesterday morning and she asked, “for my next birthday can I be 3?"

I told her she was now officially 3, and the reality of it sank in and she couldn’t contain her excitement. Having her party 2.5 weeks before her actual birthday has really confused her. She also asked for two more dinosaur cakes. I may have created a monster.

Then I told her the (kid friendly) story of how she was born and of course cried like a baby.

IMG 3776

I wanted to do something to celebrate as a family, so we all bundled up and drove to the plaza to ride on a carriage and looks at the lights.

IMG 3778

It was too bad that the only carriages available were the upgraded Cindarella version. Darn.

IMG 3783

After saying good-bye to the horse (whose name was Dan!), we ate dinner at Chuy’s. (The salsa!!!)

IMG 3769

I know Ina felt celebrated on her birthday, but it was also a time for Dan and I to celebrate the moment when our lives forever changed. At dinner we cheers’ed to three years of family, tears, laughs, and keeping Ina alive and well cared for.

On her birthday, I wanted to share the picture book I made her over the past year.
