I can't stop itching

Yesterday we found an army of ants in our pantry.  After work Abby and I emptied out the ENTIRE pantry, wiped every item down, and put it back.

Usually, I am happy to have a fully stocked pantry.  Yesterday, not so much.

I think we found the culprit - a halfway opened bottle of syrup hiding in the back.  I am the only one who has used that syrup, so the only logical answer in that the ants opened the lid.

Ever since seeing those ants i feel like they are crawling all over me.  I feel a tickle on my leg, look down, and there is nothing there.  Ick.

Any advice on getting rid of ants?  We have had a lot of rain lately, so I think that brings them in the house.  The exterminator is the last option - I don't want Ina around all those nasty fumes.

In other news - want to come over for dinner? I have a lot of food in my pantry.

In other, other news, Ina found her feet.

Or I should say, she found out they can reach to her mouth.

Looks like we have to stop painting her toes for a while.

Breakfast - a delicious green monster smoothie

In the mix - 1.5 frozen bananas, 2 handfuls of fresh spinach, 1 scoop of chocolate protein powder, 1/2 C greek yogurt, 1 C skim milk, 1 T peanut butter

Lunch: turkey, spinach, and hummus on a bagel thin with cottage cheese and pineapple

Snack: I grabbed a few handfuls of things in the pantry (and checked for ants) - mixed nuts, raisins, and butterscotch chips

Dinner - salad and stuffed peppers following this recipe

Thought for the day

  1. We have a little bit of an ant problem -- but thankfully every year they have the same point of entry into the house -- the back door. I've found that if I spray a little bit of Raid ant and roach spray just on the siding under the door, it majorly thwarts their invasion, and I don't have to spray anything in an area where I'm worried about the kids getting exposed. Even with the kids' occasional snack or breakfast that gets left out longer than it should, I really haven't noticed any ants lately! Ants also really don't like Avon Skin So Soft oil. I'm not even sure if they make it anymore, but I remember that's what my mom always used.

  2. your lunch and dinner looks so good!! ok as far as the ants, you can buy something called LIME? Maybe ? I think!? And sprinkle it around the outside of your house and the ants wont go in i think, because we had a hard time keeping them out of our dog dishes outside! good luck!

  3. We had a bit of ant problem and I did something my mom used to do: put pepper around the area they are coming in. I knew they were coming from the back door by putting pepper on some ants I spotted, then watching where they ran to. Then I put pepper on the entry floor and we've been doing well since then! My mom said she'd have to refresh the pepper sometimes but that it always worked. It's working great so far and I love that it won't hurt my dog :) I tried spraying the area with vinegar too (a suggestion from a friend) but the pepper works so much better!

  4. "I am the only one who has used that syrup, so the only logical answer in that the ants opened the lid." <-- Tee hee!

  5. Ants hate chalk and will not cross a chalk line. Kind of a fun trick, but not really that useful for treating an ant problem. Windex kills them instantly and seems to prevent their return if you spray it around their area of invasion. We had an exterminator come, but he did not fumigate. He just sprayed a fine mist around the perimeter of the floor and under the bottom edge of the cabinets. I was standing right there when he did it and there was no odor at all. It doesn't get sprayed anywhere your baby would touch, and even if she does it's nontoxic to mammals. You know how Nigel is about Dougal, and he has been happy to have the spray around places that Dougal could lick. I think you should try the Windex first and hope it's an isolated incident, but if you keep seeing a few all the time no matter what you do, then it's only a matter of time until you find the mega ant kingdom growing inside your Keurig. The you have to call the ant man. -Meg
