Keurig on the Cheap

As you all know, I love my Keruig one-cup coffee maker.  However, the one cup coffee pods can be kind of pricey - around $0.75 per cup if you buy them at the grocery store in the little 12 or 18 packs.  If you buy them in bulk, they are around $0.50 per cup (Edited to add - my friend just told me that Costco sells them in 80 count boxes for $35!).

Now that I am back to my 4 cups per day normal, and Nanny Abby is here and drinks about the same, I was starting to think that I may have to go back to a normal coffee maker.  I mean, $6 of coffee per day seems a bit ridiculous.

Then, the other day, I was browsing through my Amazon Mom subscriptions and found San Francisco Bay Coffee pods.    I bought a box of 80 for $33.  That is $0.40 per cup!  I clicked order faster than you can say, "Ineedmorecoffeenow."

The box came the next day - thanks to two day free shipping.

I was so excited to try the cups out this morning.  They look a little different form the normal k-cups.

But, they taste just the same if not better!

A few details -

  • They come in airtight containers of 8 cups because the coffee is only protected by the mesh.  I cut open a few and put them in an airtight canister next to my Keurig.
  • When I openend the container I was greeted with the lovely smell of coffee, something I was missing with the original plastic k-cups.
  • One reviewer on Amazon said that she cuts the mesh portion off and adds it to her compost pile.  I love this, because I always felt so wasteful before.
  • I bought the breakfast blend kind, but am excited to try the fog chaser next.

If you have a Keurig, I would highly recommend these.

Eats

Yesterday I tried to stretch out my already bare pantry / fridge.

Breakfast was hard boiled eggs with the last of the bread as toast.

Lunch was leftover pulled pork from the Superbowl pizza. (Topped with cheddar cheese, cilantro, and red and green onions).

Dinner - my love - green curry beef.  I ordered it a little on the spicy side, so I could only tolerate about half of that.

I ran 4.5 miles yesterday on the treadmill while watching Glee.  It felt so good, but afterwards I was completely wiped.

I barely made it to Buy Buy Baby to buy a present for my friend Brandy, whose show is today.   That wrapping job took a lot of effort.

I was so thankful Abby was there to help keep Ina's binky in her mouth.

Dan called and asked if I wanted to take the family bowling, but all I wanted to do was sit on the couch.  The only way I could convince him to stay home was to bribe him with Thai food.  And Blue Bell.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  1. I'll have to check out those coffee pods, though I love my Green Mountain Coffee!

  2. Love your blog!!! Keurig also makes reusable cups that you can use your own coffee. Just one at target for $15 last night. Seems like a great deal so far :)

  3. I am a Keurig junky - have you tried using the my K-cup? It is a pod where you put your own grounds into the pod, and pop it into your Keurig as if it were a K-cup. It is a little messier than the pre-packaged K-cups, but much cheaper.

  4. We have fogchaser at work. It's coffee. I don't really notice a difference.

I've been thinking about ordering those from Amazon as well, but I don't drink enough coffee by myself. Maybe I should add on to your next order!?!?!?!? It would take me forever to go through 1/2 of a box.
