I was feeling extra festive today, so I thought I would spruce up the blog for the holidays. :)
I feel like Santa with all the lists I have been making and checking twice and such.
Dan and I seem to have an ever-growing number of people on our Christmas List. In the past, having to plan and save for so many presents would just stress me out. That all changed a few years ago when I was babbling on to an acquaintance about all the Christmas presents I needed to buy. After I finished my rant I asked how her Christmas shopping was going. She half-smiled and replied, "I don't have anyone to buy presents for." Wow. That hit me like a ton of bricks. I tried for the next few minutes to remove my foot from my mouth, with little success.
This made me realize that Dan and I are blessed to have so many wonderful friends and family members. So, now when I make my list, I am grateful to be able to give so many presents.
With so many gifts to give, a girl must have a strategy. Here is mine:
- Christmas funds. There is nothing worse than being broke around the holidays. So, for years Dan and I have put a little bit of money each month into a "Christmas account."
- Make a list. Every year before Thanksgiving I open up an Excel spreadsheet with the people on "our list." Then, when I think of gift idea, I add it on; and when I buy the gift I "cross it off" the list.
- Interviews. Although I love giving presents, I am not always the best at picking them out. So, once in a while, I do ask people what they have been needing or wanting lately. I know that ruins the surprise of the present, but I would rather give something useful than something that just sits in a closet somewhere.
- Shop the sales. I love Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and every day after that. The past few years I have been shopping more and more online. This also helps to prevent any "impulse buys."
- No gift cards.
In running news....
I actually did run when I got home last night from work, but I think it was only around 2.5 miles. I don't think I have ran twice in one day since my freshman year of college. Yay!
This morning I ran 4.5 miles while watching Castle. Tomorrow will be more of the same, sprints on Thursday, and then a long run on Friday.
Have a wonderful day!
Thought for the day:
My grandma has a sign that says this in her living room where we pile the presents. Sometimes it is easy to get swept up in buying gifts and to forget what we are really celebrating...
